Partnership facts

• Balaji was a producer first, not an actor. He cast Pandari Bai in Mahalakshmi (1960) because he needed a strong female lead who could carry a mythological. She was already a star in Kannada and Telugu, but this was her first major Tamil film. Balaji bet his entire production budget on her name.
• On the sets of Shanti Nilayam (1969), Pandari Bai would often correct Balaji's dialogue delivery. She had more stage experience and insisted he slow down his lines. He listened. That film became their biggest critical hit together.
• Vasantha Maligai (1972) was the first Tamil film to feature a fully orchestrated background score by M.S. Viswanathan that was recorded before shooting began. Balaji and Pandari Bai's emotional scenes were literally choreographed to the music. That method became standard in Tamil cinema within five years.
• After Vasantha Maligai released, Pandari Bai quietly stopped acting in Tamil films for nearly a decade. Balaji never cast her again. No public fallout, no interview about it. They just never worked together after 1972.
• Pandari Bai once told a magazine: 'Balaji was the only co-star who never tried to change my lines. He trusted my instinct. That is rare in this industry.' She said this in a 1975 interview with Kumudam.
