Shanti Nilayam(1969)
'Shanti Nilayam' is a 1969 Indian Tamil-language musical drama film directed by G. S. Mani in his debut. The film stars Gemini Ganesan and Kanchana in lead roles, with Nagesh, Vijaya Lalitha, Pandari Bai, K. Balaji, and V. S. Raghavan in supporting roles. The story follows Malathi, an orphan who becomes a governess at a mysterious estate called Shanti Nilayam, where she uncovers dark family secrets involving a hidden mad wife and a blackmailer. The film is notable for blending elements of Charlotte Brontë's 'Jane Eyre' with the musical charm of 'The Sound of Music'. Cinematographer Marcus Bartley won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography, and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his debut song. The film was released on 23 May 1969 and ran for over 100 days in theatres.

Storyline
Orphaned and mistreated by her aunt, Malathi grows up to become a teacher. She takes a job as governess at Shanti Nilayam, a grand estate owned by the troubled Bhaskar. His five wild children slowly warm to her, but strange midnight noises and a mysterious visitor hint at a terrible secret. Malathi must decide if her love for Bhaskar can survive the truth.
