• Pandari Bai was already a huge star in Kannada cinema when she agreed to do Paavai Vilakku (1960) — but only if the director paired her with Ashokan, who was then a struggling newcomer. She insisted he had the right 'sad eyes' for the role.
• On the sets of Indira En Selvam (1962), Ashokan would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Pandari Bai laugh. She'd then reset the scene with a sharp 'Ippo sari' — and they'd nail it in one go.
• Their third film together, Nam Naadu (1969), was the first Tamil movie to feature a female police officer as a lead character — a role Pandari Bai specifically requested after Ashokan told her about a real-life woman inspector he'd met during a train journey.
• After Paavai Vilakku wrapped, Ashokan gifted Pandari Bai a gold chain with a tiny 'Paavai' pendant. She wore it in every film they made together after that — including Nam Naadu, nine years later.
• Ashokan once told a magazine: 'She taught me how to cry on camera. Before her, I only knew how to shout.'
