• Savitri was already a huge star when she agreed to do Pudhiya Padhai (1960). She specifically asked for Thangavelu as her co-star because she wanted a fresh, non-romantic pairing — she was tired of the usual heroes. The director, R. M. Krishnaswamy, took a risk and it paid off.
• In Pasamalar (1961), Thangavelu played the comic sidekick to Savitri's tragic heroine. Their scenes together were a masterclass in contrast — she would deliver heavy emotional dialogue, and he would undercut it with a single deadpan line that made the audience laugh and cry in the same breath. That rhythm was entirely improvised on set.
• The success of Pasamalar (1961) directly led to the trend of pairing a top female star with a comedian as the male lead in family dramas. Producers started casting Thangavelu opposite Savitri in Thooya Ullam (1961) specifically to repeat that formula. It didn't work as well, but it opened the door for other comedian-heroine pairings in the 1960s.
• Thangavelu and Savitri were close friends off-screen. During the shoot of Pudhiya Padhai (1960), Savitri would often cook biryani at her home and bring it to the set for the entire crew — but she always made sure Thangavelu got the first serving. He later said it was the only time he felt like a star.
• Thangavelu once said in an interview: 'Savitri made me look good. She would hold back her tears in a scene just so my comedy could land. No other actress did that for me.' He said this in a 1972 radio interview, years after their last film together.
