Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'Vetri Padigal' (1991), but it was director R. K. Selvamani who deliberately paired them as on-screen rivals. Selvamani saw that Sarath Kumar's towering frame and Ponnambalam's raw, menacing look created a visual clash that audiences hadn't seen before.
• In 'Samundi' (1992), Ponnambalam played the villain who physically bullies Sarath Kumar's character. But off-camera, Ponnambalam would deliberately hold back his punches — Sarath later said in an interview that Ponnambalam was terrified of actually hurting him, so they had to reshoot fight scenes multiple times to get the aggression right.
• Their best work together came in 'Nattamai' (1994), where Ponnambalam played a mute henchman. Since he couldn't speak, Sarath Kumar had to carry all the dialogue-heavy scenes — but Ponnambalam's physical reactions (a glare, a twitch) became the scene-stealer. Sarath later said that acting opposite a silent Ponnambalam forced him to sharpen his own timing.
• Despite playing enemies in 9 out of their 10 films, the two were close friends off-screen. Ponnambalam was a regular at Sarath Kumar's family gatherings, and Sarath personally recommended Ponnambalam for roles in other directors' films — including a key part in 'Aravindhan' (1997) that wasn't originally written for him.
• Their repeated face-off as hero vs. villain in the 1990s created a template that other Tamil films copied — most notably, the 'Baasha' (1995) dynamic between Rajinikanth and Raghuvaran. Directors started deliberately casting tall, muscular heroes opposite equally imposing villains because Sarath-Ponnambalam proved audiences loved that visual symmetry.
• Sarath Kumar once said about Ponnambalam: 'He was the only actor who could make me look vulnerable on screen. When he stared at me, I genuinely felt scared — and that's not easy to fake.'
