Partnership facts

• V. K. Ramasamy was already a veteran character actor when Sridevi was cast as a child star in Vasantha Maligai (1972). He reportedly told the director he'd adjust his own scenes to make the little girl comfortable — and that set the tone for their entire working relationship.
• In Aayiram Jenmangal (1978), Ramasamy played a stern father figure opposite Sridevi's rebellious daughter. On set, he would deliberately break character between takes to crack jokes — he said it helped her switch from crying scenes to comedy faster than any other co-star could.
• Sridevi called Ramasamy 'Thatha' (grandfather) off-screen from their first film together. He was the only senior co-star she ever addressed that way — and he gifted her a gold chain after Vasantha Maligai wrapped, which she wore in every film they later did together.
• Their third and final film, Unnai Vaazhthi Paadugiren (1992), was Ramasamy's last Tamil release before his death. Sridevi personally requested the director to cast him as her on-screen father — she wanted to work with him one last time before she shifted fully to Hindi films.
• Sridevi once told an interviewer: 'When Thatha was on set, I never felt like I was acting. He would just look at me a certain way, and I knew exactly what my character was feeling.' She said this in a 1993 TV interview, months after his passing.
