Long-Term Partnership

The Nizhalgal Ravi & Venniradai Moorthy partnership

1990 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985) to Nageswari (2001).

The unfolded closed with Nageswari in 2001. En Kitta Mothathey is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Naan Sigappu Manithan; the 2000s to Nageswari. Nizhalgal Ravi acted in every film; Venniradai Moorthy acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Director Manoj Kumar cast Nizhalgal Ravi and Venniradai Moorthy together for the first time in Idhaya Thamarai (1990) because he wanted two actors who could switch between comedy and emotion without missing a beat. Moorthy was already a stage veteran; Ravi was the rising star. The director bet the film's second half on their back-and-forth.
  • In En Kitta Mothathey (1990), Moorthy played the comic sidekick who constantly one-upped Ravi's straight-man hero. Ravi later admitted in an interview that Moorthy's timing forced him to stay on his toes — he couldn't rely on his usual pauses because Moorthy would jump in and steal the scene.
  • During the shoot of Aadi Velli (1990), the two shared a room in a small lodge near the set. Moorthy would wake up at 4 AM to rehearse his lines aloud, and Ravi — a night owl — would groan and throw a pillow at him. By the end of the schedule, Moorthy had trained Ravi to wake up early too.
  • Dharma Dorai (1991) was their only film together that tanked at the box office. But the failure had a direct ripple: the producer, who lost money on it, refused to fund any future project pairing the two. That's why they never worked together again after 1991.
