Partnership facts

• Avan Ivan (2011) was supposed to be a solo hero film for Vishal. Director Bala saw Arya in a small role in a different film and insisted on casting him as the second lead. Vishal agreed only after Bala rewrote the script to give both equal weight.
• On the sets of Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga (2015), Vishal would deliberately flub his lines to make Arya laugh. Arya then started improvising nonsense dialogues to break Vishal's composure. The director kept the camera rolling and used several of those unscripted moments in the final cut.
• During the shoot of Madha Gaja Raja (2017), Vishal and Arya made a pact: whoever finishes their shot first has to buy the other a box of filter coffee from the same shop in Chennai. They kept this ritual going for all four films, even when shooting in different locations.
• Arya said in a 2021 interview: 'Vishal is the only co-star who has seen me cry on set. Not because of a scene — because I was going through a breakup. He sat with me for two hours and didn't say a word. That's our bond.'
• Because of their easy chemistry in Avan Ivan, director Bala cast both of them again in a cameo for his 2014 film Tharai Thappattai. That cameo — just 3 minutes long — became the most-shared clip from the film on social media, and directly led to producers greenlighting their third collaboration Madha Gaja Raja.
• In Enemy (2021), Vishal played the intense, brooding cop while Arya played the slick, fast-talking conman. Vishal later admitted he deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery in their confrontation scene because Arya's natural rhythm was too quick — he wanted the audience to feel the tension of two different acting styles clashing.
