The Vadivelu & Ramesh Khanna partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Aadhavan (2009). 2001 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. They didn't share a set between 2001 and 2009.

From Thodarum (1999) to Aadhavan (2009). The work is uneven: Thodarum (6.8) at one end, Asathal (1.0) at the other.

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 80% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Thodarum; the 2000s to Friends. Vadivelu acted in every film; Ramesh Khanna acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Vadivelu and Ramesh Khanna first shared screen space in Thodarum (1999) because director R. K. Selvamani needed a quick comic relief track. Vadivelu was already a rising star, but Ramesh Khanna was still a TV writer trying to break into films. Selvamani paired them on a whim — and the audience loved their back-and-forth so much that the director extended their scenes in the final cut.
  • In Friends (2001), Vadivelu and Ramesh Khanna developed a unique rhythm: Vadivelu would deliver his lines at full speed, and Ramesh Khanna would deliberately pause for a beat before reacting. That split-second delay made every punchline land harder. Ramesh Khanna later said he learned comic timing by watching Vadivelu's feet — he'd start his reaction the moment Vadivelu shifted his weight.
  • Asathal (2001) was such a disaster — it scored 1/10 — that both actors swore off working together again. But the film's failure had a weird ripple effect: it convinced director Siddique to cast Vadivelu and Ramesh Khanna separately in his later films, because he felt their styles were too similar to share a frame. That decision directly led to Vadivelu's iconic solo comedy track in Friends (2001).
  • During the shoot of Aadhavan (2009), Vadivelu and Ramesh Khanna had a falling out over a script change. Ramesh Khanna wanted to rewrite their comedy scene; Vadivelu refused. They didn't speak for three days on set. The director, K. S. Ravikumar, locked them in a makeup room until they sorted it out. They patched up, but never made another film together after that.
  • Ramesh Khanna once said in a 2010 interview: 'Vadivelu and I are like idli and sambar — good separately, but together we make a full meal. But sometimes the sambar gets too spicy, and the idli gets soggy.' He was referring to Asathal (2001) and laughed.
