Partnership facts

• Nagesh was already a comedy star when he agreed to play second lead to I. N. Moorthy in 'Atthai Magal' (1969). Moorthy was the bigger name then — a leading man. That film flipped their dynamic and made Nagesh the one audiences remembered.
• In 'Kannan Varuvan' (1970), Moorthy played the straight man to Nagesh's comic chaos. Moorthy deliberately slowed his delivery so Nagesh could land punchlines. Nagesh later said Moorthy 'gave him the space to breathe' in every scene.
• Moorthy and Nagesh were neighbours in Chennai's Kodambakkam area during these years. They'd walk to the set together every morning for 'Aseervatham' (1972). Their wives became friends too — the two families often shared dinner after pack-up.
• The success of 'Kathalikka Vanga' (1972) directly led to Moorthy casting Nagesh in his next directorial venture. That film, 'Varaverpu' (1972), was the only time Moorthy directed Nagesh — and it became a template for the 'comedy duo with a heart' trend in early 70s Tamil cinema.
• Nagesh once told a magazine: 'Moorthy sir never treated me like a sidekick. He'd say, "Nagesh, you make the scene funny — I'll just stand there and look serious." That trust made me fearless.'
