The Nagesh & O.A.K.Thevar partnership
Between 1963 and 1970, they barely worked apart — 8 films in 7 years. 1966 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 7 years, a Nagesh–O.A.K.Thevar film arrived almost every year.
Remarkably even — every film rates between 6.5 and 7.5. From Kungumam (1963) to Maanavan (1970).
The shape of the work
The 1960s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Kungumam; the 1970s to Maanavan. Nagesh acted in every film; O.A.K.Thevar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Kungumam (1963), almost didn't happen. The director, K. S. Gopalakrishnan, was hesitant to cast Nagesh in a serious role — he was known only as a comedian. O.A.K. Thevar, already a respected character actor, personally vouched for Nagesh and insisted he could pull off the emotional weight. That film became a hit and launched Nagesh's dramatic career.
- On the sets of Sadhu Mirandal (1966), Nagesh would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Thevar laugh. Thevar, known for his deadpan intensity, would then reset the scene with a straight face — and Nagesh would deliver a perfect take. This call-and-response rhythm became their unspoken method: Thevar anchored the scene, Nagesh gave it colour.
- Their 1968 film Anbu Vazhi directly inspired the 1971 blockbuster Thangaikkaga, which launched a young actor named Sivakumar into stardom. The producer saw the Nagesh-Thevar dynamic in Anbu Vazhi — a brother sacrificing everything for family — and wanted the same emotional core for his new project.
- After every film wrap, Thevar would take Nagesh to a small tea stall near AVM Studios and buy him a single piece of Mysore Pak. Nagesh later said it was Thevar's way of saying 'good job' without words. They never discussed it — it was just their ritual for all six films.
- Nagesh once told a magazine: 'Thevar saar never laughed at my jokes on set. But after a scene, he'd just nod once. That nod meant more to me than a hundred applause.'
