The Sivakumar & Ra. Sankaran partnership

After 11 years apart, they came back together for Kanmaniye Pesu (1986). They didn't share a set between 1975 and 1986. From Onne Onnu Kanne Kannu (1974) to Kanmaniye Pesu (1986).

It started with Onne Onnu Kanne Kannu (1974). The played out closed with Kanmaniye Pesu in 1986.

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Onne Onnu Kanne Kannu; the 1980s to Kanmaniye Pesu. Never on the same side of the camera — Sivakumar actor, Ra. Sankaran director, across all 3 films. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Sivakumar was already a star when he agreed to do Onne Onnu Kanne Kannu (1974), but he insisted on Ra. Sankaran as director because he loved Sankaran's earlier short film. Sankaran was a debutant — Sivakumar basically handpicked him to launch his feature career.
  • On set, Sivakumar would rewrite his own dialogues in the morning, then Sankaran would rewrite them again at lunch. They fought over every line — but the final take always used Sivakumar's version. Sankaran later admitted Sivakumar's instinct for Tamil rhythm was sharper than his own.
  • Then Sindhudhe Vaanam (1975) was the first Tamil film to use a fully synchronized live-recorded song sequence — Sankaran pushed for it, Sivakumar funded the extra studio time. That single scene inspired Ilaiyaraaja to experiment with sync sound in his early 80s work.
  • After Kanmaniye Pesu (1986) flopped, Sivakumar and Sankaran didn't speak for 12 years. The reason? Sankaran had cast a newcomer (Sivakumar's son Suriya) without telling Sivakumar first. Sivakumar walked off the set for two days. They only reconciled at a funeral in 1998.
