Partnership facts

• Sivaji Ganesan personally requested Senthamarai for the role of the villain in 'Gauravam' (1973). He had seen Senthamarai's stage work and told the director, 'He will make the audience hate him, and that's what we need.'
• In 'Chitra Pournami' (1976), Senthamarai's character was written as a loud, over-the-top antagonist. But on set, Sivaji quietly told him to underplay every line. The result was a chilling, restrained villain who let Sivaji's rage do the heavy lifting.
• Senthamarai was a regular at Sivaji's home during the making of 'Naan Vazhavaippen' (1979). They would rehearse scenes in Sivaji's living room late into the night, often with Sivaji's wife serving them coffee. Senthamarai later said those nights felt like 'acting school with a master.'
• Senthamarai once told a magazine: 'Sivaji sir never treated me like a supporting actor. He would say, "You are the reason my hero looks heroic." That stayed with me.'
• The success of their face-off scenes in 'Gauravam' (1973) directly inspired director K. Balachander to cast them again in 'Naan Vazhavaippen' (1979). Balachander said he wanted to 'recreate that voltage' between the two actors.
