The Prakash Raj & Gunasekhar partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for Rudramadevi (2015). Their work runs across 4 decades of Telugu cinema. They didn't share a set between 2006 and 2015.

From Choodalani Vundi (1998) to Shaakuntalam (2023). Their most recent film, Shaakuntalam, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Choodalani Vundi; the 2020s to Shaakuntalam. Prakash Raj acted in every film; Gunasekhar directed all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Prakash Raj was not the first choice for the villain in Okkadu (2003). Gunasekhar initially wanted a different actor, but Prakash Raj auditioned and convinced him on the spot with a raw, intense reading. That role made him a household name as a反派.
  • On the sets of Arjun (2004), Gunasekhar would let Prakash Raj rewrite his own dialogues in Telugu. Prakash Raj’s natural, earthy phrasing gave the villain a unpredictability that the director’s original script didn’t have. The result? A hit that ran over 100 days.
  • Their collaboration on Rudramadevi (2015) directly launched the career of composer Ilaiyaraaja’s son, Karthik Raja, who scored the film. Gunasekhar insisted on giving the young composer a break, and Prakash Raj backed the decision publicly during production.
  • After Manoharam (2000) flopped, Gunasekhar called Prakash Raj and said, “I owe you a proper film.” That promise led to Okkadu (2003). They stayed friends through the years, and Prakash Raj was the first person Gunasekhar called when he decided to make Shakuntalam (2023) in Telugu.
  • Gunasekhar once said in an interview: “Prakash Raj doesn’t act — he becomes the character. When he played the villain in Okkadu, I stopped seeing my friend on set. I only saw the monster I wrote.”
