Partnership facts

• For Yanai Paagan (1960), director K. V. Srinivasan wanted a fresh pair. He cast Saroja Devi opposite P. S. Veerappa because Veerappa's booming voice and towering frame would make her delicate screen presence pop. It was a deliberate visual gamble.
• In Aalayamani (1962), Veerappa played the heavy villain while Saroja Devi played the wronged heroine. Their scenes crackled because Veerappa deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery — he said later that he wanted her expressive eyes to do the reacting, not his words.
• Saroja Devi and Veerappa never became close friends off-screen. She found him intimidatingly serious on set. He once told a crew member, 'She acts like a queen, so I treat her like one — from a distance.' They never shared a meal together across all three films.
• Arasa Kattalai (1967) was their last film together. It was also the film that convinced producer M. A. V. Rajendran to cast Veerappa as the lead in his next project — a rare hero role for a man mostly typecast as villain. That film? The cult hit Thaali Bhagyam.
• Saroja Devi once said in a 2005 interview: 'Veerappa sir never looked at me when we acted. He said if he looked, he'd forget his lines. So we acted side by side, facing the camera, never each other. It worked.'
