• K. Shankar was already a top director when he cast S. A. Ashokan as the villain in Panathottam (1963). Ashokan had just one film before that. Shankar took a risk on a newcomer with zero box-office pull.
• In Ezhai Pangalan (1963), Shankar wrote a courtroom scene where Ashokan’s character breaks down mid-speech. Ashokan improvised the pause. Shankar kept the take. That moment became the film’s most talked-about scene.
• Because Shankar trusted Ashokan with the lead villain role in Idhu Sathyam (1963), Ashokan got noticed by M. G. Ramachandran. MGR later cast him in multiple films. That one Shankar film opened the door for Ashokan’s entire career.
• Shankar and Ashokan never worked together after 1963. No falling out. Shankar just moved to bigger budgets. Ashokan later said in an interview that Shankar never called him again, and he never asked why.
• Ashokan once told a magazine: 'Shankar sir gave me my first real role. I didn't even know how to stand in front of a camera. He taught me that.' He said this in a 1985 interview with Kumudam.
