Partnership facts

• Jaishankar was already a star when he agreed to do Dheiva Vamsam (1973) — but he only signed on after director K. Vijayan promised him a role that broke his usual 'angry young man' image. Vijayan had to rewrite the entire second half to convince him.
• On the sets of Eduppar Kai Pillai (1975), Vijayan realized Jaishankar was terrible at comedy timing. So he deliberately shot all of Jaishankar's comic scenes in single takes — forcing the actor to nail the rhythm without cuts. Jaishankar later admitted that pressure made him a better performer.
• After Bandham (1985) wrapped, Vijayan and Jaishankar had a falling out over a delayed payment. They didn't speak for nearly a decade. Vijayan broke the silence only when Jaishankar's health declined in the mid-90s — he visited him in the hospital and paid the old dues in cash.
• The success of Dheiva Vamsam (1973) directly led to Vijayan casting Jaishankar in a cameo for his next film — and that cameo became so popular that it spawned a separate spin-off film starring the same character, launching a minor franchise in Tamil B-movie circuits.
