The Manobala & Shanmugarajan partnership

They saved their best for last — Tenaliraman (6.5/10) came 8 years in. From Thambi (2006) to Mappilai Vinayagar (2015). It started with Thambi (2006).

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Thambi; the 2010s to Tenaliraman. Manobala acted in every film; Shanmugarajan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Manobala was a veteran character actor before he turned director. Shanmugarajan was a newcomer writer. For 'Seval' (2008), Shanmugarajan wrote the script specifically for Manobala to direct — he didn't pitch it to anyone else. Manobala later said he took the film only because the script had a role for him to act in too.
  • On the sets of 'Dindigul Sarathy' (2008), Manobala would rewrite Shanmugarajan's dialogue on the spot — but only after Shanmugarajan argued it out with him. The tension made the comedy sharper. Shanmugarajan later admitted Manobala's edits saved the film from being too preachy.
  • 'Tenaliraman' (2014) was the first Tamil film to spoof the historical Tenali Ramakrishna as a full-length comedy. Because Manobala and Shanmugarajan made it together, it opened the door for more period-parody films in Tamil — though none matched its cult following.
  • After 'Mappilai Vinayagar' (2015) flopped, Manobala and Shanmugarajan stopped talking for nearly two years. They patched up only when Manobala called Shanmugarajan to act in a small role in his 2017 film. Neither ever explained the fight publicly.
  • Shanmugarajan once told a magazine: 'Manobala sir would say my jokes are too clever for the frontbencher. I would say his jokes are too cheap for the balcony. We met somewhere in the middle — and that middle is where the laugh came from.'
