• Savitri was already a huge star when she agreed to do Karpagam (1963). But she only signed on after Gopalakrishnan promised her the script would be built around her strengths — not just a hero's film with her as decoration.
• On the sets of Ayiram Roobai (1964), Gopalakrishnan would let Savitri rewrite her own dialogues. He trusted her instinct for Tamil comedy timing more than his own writing. She often made the lines sharper on the spot.
• During the shoot of Kai Koduttha Dheivam (1964), Savitri would personally cook Gopalakrishnan's favourite biryani and bring it to the set. The crew knew it was a 'good mood day' when they saw the tiffin box.
• The success of Karpagam (1963) directly led to Gopalakrishnan casting Savitri in two more films back-to-back. That trio of films made her the highest-paid actress in Tamil cinema at the time — a record she held until the late 60s.
• Gopalakrishnan once said in an interview: 'Savitri didn't just act in my films — she co-directed them with her eyes. I'd look at her reaction after a take, and if she frowned, I knew we had to reshoot.'
