• Thengai Srinivasan was a popular comedian when he was cast in Kanmani Raja (1974). But Sumithra, then a rising star, insisted that the director give him a meatier role than the usual comic relief. That film became their first hit together.
• In Rudhra Thaandavam (1978), Sumithra and Thengai Srinivasan played a married couple. She later said in an interview that he would deliberately flub his lines to make her laugh during serious scenes — and the director kept those takes because her genuine laughter fit the character.
