• In 'Virasat' (1997), Tabu played Amrish Puri's daughter-in-law. The director, Priyadarshan, deliberately cast them together because he wanted a father figure who could be both terrifying and vulnerable — and a daughter-in-law who could stand up to him without blinking. Puri later said Tabu was the only actress who made him nervous on set.
• In 'Chachi 420' (1997), Puri played Tabu's father — but the twist is that Tabu's character is actually Kamal Haasan in disguise. Puri had to react to 'Tabu' as if she were his real daughter, while knowing the actor behind her was a man. He later admitted that Tabu's performance made him forget he was acting opposite a man in a fat suit.
• Their third film together, 'Thakshak' (1999), was the only one where they played equals — Puri as a ruthless industrialist, Tabu as his morally conflicted employee. The film flopped, but it directly inspired the mentor-mentee dynamic in later crime dramas like 'Company' (2002), where a younger actor (Ajay Devgn) plays off an older patriarch (Mohan Joshi).
• On the sets of 'Virasat', Puri would call Tabu 'beti' (daughter) off-camera too. He once brought her a box of homemade ladoos from his wife's kitchen after she nailed a particularly emotional scene. Tabu still keeps a photo of them from that film in her Mumbai home.
• Tabu once said in an interview: 'Amrish ji never treated me like a junior artiste. He would rehearse with me for hours before a scene, even if it was just a two-line exchange. He taught me that silence can be louder than dialogue.'
