• Kamal Haasan was already a star when he signed Kalyanaraman (1979), but director G. N. Rangarajan wasn't sure he'd say yes. Kamal read the script in one sitting and called Rangarajan at 2 AM to confirm — waking him up.
• Rangarajan let Kamal rewrite entire dialogue portions in Meendum Kokila (1981). Kamal turned a straightforward comedy into a layered satire on marriage — and Rangarajan didn't cut a single line.
• Ellam Inba Mayyam (1981) was the first Tamil film to use a split-screen technique in a song sequence. Rangarajan and Kamal storyboarded it together on a napkin at a roadside stall.
• During the shoot of Kadal Meengal (1981), Kamal and Rangarajan would argue for hours about the climax. They'd settle it by flipping a coin — and the loser had to buy dinner for the entire crew that night.
• Kamal once said about Rangarajan: 'He never told me how to act. He just said, 'Be honest to the moment.' That's the only direction I ever needed from him.'
• Rani Theni (1982) was their last film together. After that, Rangarajan moved to directing only family dramas, and Kamal shifted to experimental cinema. Neither ever explained why they stopped — but fans still ask.
