The Kamal Haasan & Revathi partnership

From Oru Kaidhiyin Diary (1985) to Cha Cha Charlee (1996). The spanned closed with Cha Cha Charlee in 1996. It started with Oru Kaidhiyin Diary (1985).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Punnagai Mannan; the 1990s to Thevar Magan. Kamal Haasan acted in every film; Revathi acted in all of them. Mostly Tamil, with 1 film in Hindi.

Partnership facts

  • Kamal Haasan personally chose Revathi for Oru Kaidhiyin Diary (1985) after watching her in a Malayalam film. He was so sure she was right that he didn't even audition her — just called her and said, 'You're doing my next film.'
  • On the sets of Punnagai Mannan (1986), Kamal would deliberately mess up his lines in the middle of a take just to make Revathi laugh. She couldn't keep a straight face, and those genuine giggles made it into the final cut — the director loved the spontaneity.
  • During Thevar Magan (1992), Revathi was going through a tough personal phase. Kamal would sit with her between shots, not talking about the film at all — just cracking dumb jokes to keep her mood light. She later said that's when she knew he wasn't just a co-star but a real friend.
  • Magalir Mattum (1994) was the first Tamil film to have an all-women lead cast in a mainstream comedy. Kamal produced it and cast Revathi as the anchor of the group. That film directly inspired later female-led comedies like 'Soodhu Kavvum' and 'Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom'.
  • Revathi once said in an interview: 'Kamal doesn't act with you — he acts for you. He gives you so much space that you forget the camera is there. That's why I never felt nervous with him, even in my first Tamil film.'
  • In Cha Cha Charlee (1996), Kamal played a ventriloquist and Revathi played his love interest. He taught her how to lip-sync to his dummy's voice in real time during their scenes together — no dubbing, no ADR. She had to match his dummy's rhythm perfectly, and they rehearsed that for weeks.
