The Brahmanandam & V. V. Vinayak partnership

They saved their best for last — Khaidi No:150 (6.9/10) came 9 years in. From Krishna (2008) to Khaidi No:150 (2017). It started with Krishna (2008).

The shape of the work

The 2010s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Krishna; the 2010s to Khaidi No:150. Brahmanandam acted in every film; V. V. Vinayak directed all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Vinayak didn't write Brahmanandam's role in 'Krishna' (2008) for him. He wrote it for another comedian. But Brahmanandam heard about the script, called Vinayak directly, and said he wanted to play the character 'Brahmi' — a name that became the character's actual name in the film.
  • In 'Adhurs' (2010), Vinayak gave Brahmanandam a free hand to improvise the entire 'Bhattu' track. Brahmanandam would show up on set with new one-liners every day, and Vinayak would rewrite the scene around them on the spot. The 'Chammak Challo' spoof sequence was entirely Brahmanandam's idea, shot in one take.
  • The 'Bhattu' character from 'Adhurs' (2010) became so popular that Vinayak and Brahmanandam spun it off into a standalone comedy track in 'Naayak' (2013). That track — where Brahmanandam plays a fake godman — was later copied beat-for-beat in a Hindi film comedy scene two years later.
  • On the sets of 'Alludu Sreenu' (2014), Brahmanandam would finish his shots early and then sit behind the monitor, giving Vinayak unsolicited feedback on other actors' performances. Vinayak never asked him to stop — he said it kept the set lively. They'd then eat lunch together, always biryani from the same hotel.
  • Vinayak once said in an interview: 'Brahmanandam garu is the only actor I allow to change my dialogues on set. Because his version is always funnier than mine. I'd be a fool to say no.'
  • In 'Khaidi No: 150' (2017), Vinayak deliberately wrote a silent comedy stretch for Brahmanandam — no dialogues, just physical reactions. It was the first time in their six-film partnership that Brahmanandam didn't speak a single line for a full five-minute sequence. Vinayak wanted to prove his comic timing didn't need words.
