• Cheran wrote Desiya Geetham (1998) specifically for Vijayakumar after being blown away by his performance in a stage play. He didn't even audition anyone else.
• On the set of Pokkisham (2009), Cheran would deliberately pause mid-dialogue to let Vijayakumar's silence do the acting. Vijayakumar later said Cheran was the only director who trusted him to hold a scene without words.
• Between Desiya Geetham and Pokkisham, they didn't speak for nearly a decade. Cheran had publicly criticized Vijayakumar's choice of commercial films, and Vijayakumar took it personally. They only reconciled when Cheran called him out of the blue in 2008 to offer Pokkisham.
• Chennaiyil Oru Naal (2013) was the first Tamil film to use a single-location, real-time thriller format — directly inspired by the Hollywood film Phone Booth. Their collaboration proved that two actors could carry an entire film without a single song or fight sequence.
