The Santhanam & Rajendran partnership

2017 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 12 years, a SanthanamRajendran film arrived almost every year. From Raja Rani (2013) to Devil's Double Next Level (2025).

Their most recent film, Devil's Double Next Level, came out in 2025 — the partnership is still active. Raja Rani is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 2010s belonged to Raja Rani; the 2020s to Kick. Santhanam acted in every film; Rajendran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first shared screen space in Dhilluku Dhuddu (2016), but the pairing almost didn't happen. Director Rambhala originally wanted a different actor for the comic sidekick role. Santhanam personally insisted on Rajendran, saying only he could match his timing in a horror-comedy.
  • In A1 (2019), Santhanam played the straight man while Rajendran did all the physical comedy. Santhanam later admitted in an interview that he deliberately slowed his own dialogue delivery so Rajendran's reactions would land harder — a rare case of a lead actor adjusting his rhythm for a co-star.
  • Their back-and-forth in Dhilluku Dhuddu 2 (2019) directly inspired a wave of horror-comedy buddy films in Tamil cinema. Producers started actively pairing a 'scared hero' with a 'clueless friend' after that film's surprise hit status.
  • On the sets of Oodi Oodi Uzhaikanum (2017), the two shared a room during outdoor shoots. Rajendran would cook simple meals because Santhanam hated the catering. They had a standing rule: no discussing work after 10 PM.
  • "He is the only actor who makes me forget my lines because I'm laughing so hard. We had to reshoot the climax of Enakku Vaitha Adimaigal three times because I kept breaking character." — Santhanam about Rajendran, in a 2018 press meet for the film's TV premiere.
  • In Kick (2023), they swapped their usual roles: Rajendran played the calm, logical friend while Santhanam was the panicky one. The switch worked because they had spent seven years building trust — each knew exactly when to let the other take the lead.
