The K. Balachander & Major Sundarrajan partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Server Sundaram (1964) to Sri Raghavendra (1985). Punnagai (1971, 7.6/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

The spanned closed with Sri Raghavendra in 1985. Server Sundaram is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1960s belonged to Server Sundaram; the 1980s to Enga Ooru Kannagi. K. Balachander directed every film; Major Sundarrajan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Balachander cast Major Sundarrajan in Neerkumizhi (1965) after seeing him on stage. But the Major almost walked off set on day one — he hated the dialogue. Balachander convinced him to stay by rewriting the scene overnight, right there in the hotel room.
  • On Ethir Neechal (1968), Balachander would give Sundarrajan only the broad beats of a scene — no full script. The Major would then improvise his lines in real time, and Balachander would build the other actors' reactions around whatever he came up with. That's why those scenes feel so alive.
  • Their 1971 film Punnagai directly inspired the character of the wisecracking sidekick in later Tamil comedies. Without Sundarrajan's deadpan timing in that film, you don't get Goundamani's rhythm a decade later.
  • After every film wrap, Balachander and Sundarrajan would share a single cigarette — no matter how many people were around. It was their private ritual. They never explained why, but crew members knew not to interrupt that moment.
  • Balachander once said about Sundarrajan: 'He could make me laugh with just a raised eyebrow. I wrote Ethiroli (1970) specifically to give him a scene where he had to say nothing for three minutes — and he stole the whole film.'
