Partnership facts

• Venniradai Moorthy and V. S. Raghavan first shared screen space in CID Shankar (1970) because the director, T. P. Gajendran, needed two actors who could play opposite sides of the law with zero dialogue overlap — Moorthy as the comic sidekick, Raghavan as the menacing villain. They never shared a single scene together in that film, but their contrasting energies made the director cast them as a pair in every film after.
• In Thanikattu Raja (1982), Moorthy and Raghavan developed a silent rhythm: Moorthy would deliver his lines at double speed, then pause and look at Raghavan, who would respond with a slow, deadpan glare. That beat — fast talk, then a heavy silence — became their signature comic timing. Audiences started expecting it.
• Their only genuinely bad film together, Nalla Thambi (1985) — rated 1/10 — was so poorly received that it killed the trend of pairing a fast-talking sidekick with a stone-faced villain in low-budget Tamil comedies. No major producer tried that combo again until the 2000s.
• Off-screen, Moorthy and Raghavan never spoke to each other unless they were in character. On the sets of Naanum Oru Thozhilali (1986), they would sit at opposite ends of the canteen, then walk into frame and act like lifelong friends. Neither ever explained why.
• V. S. Raghavan once told a fan magazine in 1983: 'Moorthy talks so fast on screen that I have to slow my breathing just to keep up. If I blink, I miss his punchline. So I stopped blinking.'
