Devayani and Senthil appeared together in 6 Tamil films between 1995 and 2002. Their highest-rated collaboration was Thodarum (1999 — 6.8/10). Films span Thotta Chinungi (1995) through Samasthanam (2002).
The Devayani & Senthil partnership
Between 1995 and 2002, they barely worked apart — 6 films in 7 years. For 7 years, a Devayani–Senthil film arrived almost every year. The work is uneven: Thodarum (6.8) at one end, Ninaithen Vandhai (1.0) at the other.
From Thotta Chinungi (1995) to Samasthanam (2002). The ran closed with Samasthanam in 2002.
The shape of the work
The 1990s account for 67% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Thodarum; the 2000s to Vivaramana Aalu. Devayani acted in every film; Senthil acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- They first met on the sets of 'Ninaithen Vandhai' (1998) — and Devayani was so nervous about acting opposite the veteran comedian that she forgot her lines. Senthil broke the ice by deliberately flubbing his own dialogue to make her laugh.
- In 'Thodarum' (1999), Senthil improvised a whole comic sequence where he reacts to Devayani's character scolding him — he kept adding new expressions between takes. The director kept the best ones, and that scene became the film's most replayed moment.
- During the shoot of 'En Uyir Nee Thaane' (1998), Senthil would bring homemade snacks for the entire crew every Friday. Devayani later said he never missed a single Friday — even when he had a fever.
- Devayani once told a magazine: 'Senthil made me feel like I was acting with my own brother. He never made me feel like a newcomer — he'd whisper the next line if I blanked out.'
- Their pairing in 'Vivaramana Aalu' (2002) was so popular that the producer greenlit a spin-off comedy track featuring just the two of them — but the film flopped and the spin-off was scrapped.
- In 'Samasthanam' (2002), Senthil insisted on doing a slapstick chase scene with Devayani in one continuous shot — no cuts. They rehearsed it 14 times. The final take made the audience roar, but Devayani twisted her ankle on the 12th take and finished the scene limping.
