Partnership facts

• Manivannan actually directed Jaishankar in 'Subash' (1996). It wasn't a producer pairing them — Manivannan, already a veteran character actor and director, specifically wrote the role of a retired army officer for Jaishankar, pulling him out of a career slump.
• In 'Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen' (1997), Manivannan played Jaishankar's loyal friend. Their scenes worked because Manivannan deliberately slowed his own dialogue delivery to match Jaishankar's measured, aristocratic style — making Jaishankar look more commanding by contrast.
• Manivannan and Jaishankar were close off-screen. Manivannan later admitted in an interview that he cast Jaishankar in all three films partly out of personal loyalty — Jaishankar was struggling with health issues and fewer offers in the late 90s.
• Manivannan once said about Jaishankar: 'He had a dignity that no other actor in Tamil cinema had. I wrote my scenes around that dignity.' He said this in a 1998 interview with a Tamil weekly, explaining why he kept casting him.
• Their third film 'Chinna Raja' (1999) was the last theatrical release for both men. Jaishankar died just a year later in 2000. Manivannan never directed another film with a co-star of Jaishankar's generation again — he shifted entirely to younger actors after this.
