• Manivannan was a dialogue writer before he turned director. For his directorial debut 'Gopurangal Saivathillai' (1982), he specifically wrote the female lead with Nalini in mind — he had watched her in a small role and felt she had the 'sad eyes' the character needed. He tracked her down at a dubbing studio and offered her the part on the spot.
• On the sets of 'Nooravathu Naal' (1984), Manivannan would deliberately not give Nalini her full dialogue sheet before a scene. He wanted her to react with genuine surprise. She later said this made her feel like she was 'living the scene for the first time' — and it became their unspoken method for all five films.
• Their 1984 film '24 Mani Neram' was one of the earliest Tamil films to use a single-setting thriller format — almost the entire story unfolds in one night inside a house. Years later, director Mysskin cited this film as a direct influence on his own single-location thriller 'Anjathe' (2008).
• After 'Palaivana Rojakkal' (1986), Manivannan and Nalini never worked together again — not because of a fallout, but because Manivannan shifted to acting full-time and stopped directing for nearly a decade. Nalini once said in an interview that she 'still waits for a call from him' for a reunion film. It never came.
• Nalini, in a 2014 interview: 'Manivannan sir never treated me like an actress. He treated me like a co-writer. He'd ask, "What would you say here?" and if my line was better than his, he'd use it. That's why our films feel like conversations, not performances.'
