The Vanisri & Major Sundarrajan partnership

From Thanga Thambi (1967) to Ilaya Thalaimurai (1977). Uyarndha Manidhan (1968, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. The ran closed with Ilaya Thalaimurai in 1977.

Punnagai is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Thanga Thambi (1967).

The shape of the work

The 1960s belonged to Uyarndha Manidhan; the 1970s to Punnagai. Vanisri acted in every film; Major Sundarrajan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Director M. A. Thirumugam cast Vanisri opposite Major Sundarrajan in Thanga Thambi (1967) because he wanted a fresh pair — Sundarrajan was already a stage giant, but Vanisri was relatively new to Tamil cinema. She later said she was nervous acting opposite him, but he deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery in their first scene together to match her rhythm.
  • In Uyarndha Manidhan (1968), Sundarrajan played a blind man, and Vanisri played his caretaker. She physically guided him through every scene — but off-camera, he was the one directing her blocking. He would whisper stage directions into her ear between takes, so the on-screen dependency felt real.
  • Their best-known film together, Vasantha Maligai (1972), was a musical romance where Sundarrajan’s character was a mute gardener. Vanisri had to carry all the dialogue — but she later admitted that his expressive eyes and hand gestures made her forget she was acting alone. She said he ‘spoke more without words than most actors do with a script.’
  • During the shoot of Punnagai (1971), Vanisri’s father passed away. Sundarrajan quietly took over her scenes for two days, playing opposite a stand-in, so the director wouldn’t recast her. He never told the press. She found out only years later from a crew member.
  • Vanisri once said in a 1980s interview: ‘Major Sundarrajan was the only co-star who never once made me feel like a junior artiste. He treated me as an equal from our first film. That’s why I said yes to every film he asked me to do.’
  • Their pairing in Vasantha Maligai (1972) directly inspired director K. Balachander to cast a similar age-gap romantic pair in his next film — which launched the career of a young Rajinikanth as a supporting actor. Balachander later said he wanted that same ‘quiet intensity’ Sundarrajan and Vanisri had.
