Partnership facts

• Bazmee first cast Rawal in 'Hulchul' (1995) after seeing him in a Gujarati play. Rawal was hesitant about the comedy role — Bazmee convinced him by promising he could improvise his lines. That freedom became the blueprint for their next four films.
• On the sets of 'Welcome' (2007), Rawal would rewrite his own dialogues in the morning and Bazmee would shoot them the same day. The director never saw a script before Rawal showed up — he trusted Rawal's comic timing more than his own writing.
• The 'Welcome' franchise directly launched the catchphrase "Dr. Ghungroo" into Indian pop culture. Bazmee and Rawal created the character on set — it wasn't in the original script. That one improvised bit spawned memes, ringtone downloads, and a generation of fans quoting it at weddings.
• Rawal and Bazmee have a standing rule: no phone calls after 9 PM. During 'No Problem' (2010), Bazmee once called Rawal at 11 PM with a script change. Rawal hung up. Next morning, Bazmee showed up at his house with a handwritten apology note. They've never broken the 9 PM rule since.
• Rawal once said about Bazmee: "He doesn't direct actors. He creates a playground and says 'go play.' I've never had a director who trusts my instincts more — even when my instincts are wrong."
