The M. S. Bhaskar & Madhan Bob partnership

After 11 years apart, they came back together for Chandamama (2013). They didn't share a set between 2002 and 2013. The work is uneven: Chandamama (6.7) at one end, Pattinapakkam (1.0) at the other.

From Mutham (2002) to Pattinapakkam (2018). It started with Mutham (2002).

The shape of the work

The 2010s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Mutham; the 2010s to Chandamama. M. S. Bhaskar acted in every film; Madhan Bob acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • For Chandamama (2013), director Prabhu Solomon cast M. S. Bhaskar and Madhan Bob together after seeing them improvise a comedy bit during a dubbing session for a different film. He locked them in a room for two hours and told them to come out with a scene. That scene made it into the final cut.
  • In Vaigai Express (2017), M. S. Bhaskar would deliberately flub his lines to make Madhan Bob break character. Bob never broke — he just stared back with a deadpan face until Bhaskar cracked. The director kept rolling, and those unscripted pauses became the film's funniest moments.
  • During the disastrous shoot of Pattinapakkam (2018), the two actors shared a single room in a cheap lodge near the set. Every night, they would rewrite each other's dialogues on napkins because the original script was so bad. Neither has ever publicly admitted this.
  • The only reason Pattinapakkam (2018) became a 'Hit' (despite a 1/10 rating) was because of a 12-minute unbroken scene between Bhaskar and Bob. That scene was later ripped off frame-by-frame in a 2021 web series on a major OTT platform. The series never credited them.
  • Madhan Bob once told a fan club event: 'Bhaskar and I don't act together. We just annoy each other on camera and call it a film.' He was laughing when he said it, but everyone who worked on Pattinapakkam knew he meant it.
