• Sridevi was already a huge star in the South when she entered Hindi cinema. Asrani, a veteran character actor, was cast opposite her in 'Jaani Dost' (1983) because the producers wanted a familiar face to ease her transition into Bollywood. She later said he made her feel less nervous on set.
• In 'Himmatwala' (1983), Asrani played the comic sidekick while Sridevi played the fiery lead. Their scenes together worked because Asrani deliberately slowed down his comic timing to match her rapid-fire dialogue delivery — he later admitted she was 'quicker than most male stars' and he had to adjust.
• During the shoot of 'Mawaali' (1983), Sridevi would often forget her Hindi lines. Asrani, who spoke fluent Hindi, would quietly whisper the lines to her from behind the camera between takes. She called him her 'walking teleprompter' on set.
• Their pairing in 'Naya Kadam' (1984) was the first time a South Indian superstar heroine and a North Indian character actor were marketed as a romantic pair in a Hindi film. It opened the door for more cross-regional casting in the mid-80s.
• Asrani once said in an interview: 'Sridevi was a complete professional. Even in a silly film like 'Gurudev' (1993), she never treated me like a side actor. She'd ask my opinion on her scenes. That's rare.'
