Partnership facts

• Govinda was already a rising star when Sonam was cast opposite him in Asmaan Se Ooncha (1989). She was a newcomer, and he reportedly helped her get comfortable on set by cracking jokes between takes — a habit he kept for all three films.
• In Aakhri Baazi (1989), Govinda played a street-smart gambler while Sonam played a journalist. Their scenes together worked because Govinda’s manic energy pushed Sonam to react faster — she later said he made her improvise on the spot, which she wasn’t used to as a trained actress.
• Baaz (1992) was the only film where they played a married couple. The film’s moderate success at the box office convinced producer Pahlaj Nihalani to cast Govinda in a similar action-comedy role in Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), which became a massive hit and redefined Govinda’s career.
• Sonam and Govinda never worked together after Baaz (1992). Neither has publicly explained why, but industry gossip at the time suggested a fallout over a missed promotional event. They haven’t been photographed together since the early 1990s.
• In a 1993 interview, Sonam said about Govinda: 'He’s the only co-star who made me laugh so hard during a scene that the director had to cut. We’d ruin three takes before getting one right.'
