• Om Puri and Kirron Kher first shared screen space in Kurbaan (1991), but they barely had a scene together. The real spark came 15 years later when Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra cast them as mother and son in Rang De Basanti — Kirron had to convince Om to take the role of her on-screen son, because he felt he was too old to play her son.
• In Rang De Basanti, Om Puri played the stoic, heartbroken father while Kirron Kher played the fiery, grieving mother. Their only shared scene — the confrontation at the police station — was shot in one take because both actors refused to break character. Om later said Kirron's raw intensity made him forget his lines twice, but he stayed in silence because it felt real.
• During the shoot of Singh Is Kinng (2008), Om Puri and Kirron Kher developed a running joke: they would greet each other on set by swapping lines from their old films. Kirron would quote a line from Kurbaan, and Om would respond with a line from his own classic. The crew thought they were rehearsing; they were just messing around.
• Kirron Kher once said about Om Puri: 'He was the only co-star who could make me laugh in the middle of a crying scene. In Singh Is Kinng, we had a scene where I had to slap him — he whispered a joke right before the take, and I couldn't stop laughing. The director kept the blooper.'
• The success of Rang De Basanti (2006) directly led to Singh Is Kinng (2008) — the producers wanted to recreate the mother-son magic in a comedy. That film became Akshay Kumar's first Rs 100 crore grosser, and both Om and Kirron were credited in interviews for giving the film its emotional anchor.
