• Y. Gee. Mahendra was a stage actor with zero film experience when K. R. Vijaya insisted he be cast as her hero in Tharaasu (1984). The director wanted a known face; Vijaya fought for Mahendra because she had seen him in a play and believed he had the intensity for the role.
• On the sets of Padikkaatha Pannaiyar (1985), Vijaya would deliberately flub her lines in the first take to make Mahendra relax. She told him later that his nervousness made her nervous, so she broke the ice by messing up on purpose. He never forgot that.
• After Raja Rishi (1985) wrapped, Mahendra gifted Vijaya a gold chain with a tiny theatre mask pendant. He said it was because she gave him his first film break. She still wears it in public sometimes.
