• Farhan was supposed to just produce Luck by Chance. But Zoya’s first draft was so personal — about a struggling actor in Bollywood — that he told her, ‘You need a director who gets this world.’ She looked at him and said, ‘That’s you.’ He directed it. That film became her debut as a writer-director.
• On Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Zoya wrote the script knowing Farhan would play the buttoned-up, anxious Arjun. She told him to stop being charming on camera — to hold tension in his jaw, to not smile. He hated it. But that performance is why the film works: his release in the sea-scene hits because she made him hold back for two hours.
• Dil Dhadakne Do launched the on-screen pairing of Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma as a couple — they’d never played lovers before. Zoya cast them because she wanted a ‘modern, bickering, real’ vibe. That film directly led to them being cast together again in Zero and Band Baaja Baaraat? No — actually, it made producers believe they could sell a non-masala romance.
