The Rishi Kapoor & Kalpataru partnership

From Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1988) to Ghar Ki Izzat (1994). The played out closed with Ghar Ki Izzat in 1994. It started with Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1988).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Bade Ghar Ki Beti; the 1990s to Ghar Ki Izzat. Rishi Kapoor acted in every film; Kalpataru directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Rishi Kapoor was the one who pushed for Kalpataru to direct him in 'Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani' (1988). Kalpataru had mostly made regional films before that. Rishi saw his earlier work and insisted the producers give him a shot in Hindi cinema.
  • On the set of 'Bade Ghar Ki Beti' (1989), Kalpataru let Rishi rewrite most of his own dialogue. Rishi would improvise lines in his signature Haryanvi-Hindi mix. Kalpataru never stopped him. He said Rishi knew the audience better than any script.
  • After 'Ghar Ki Izzat' (1994) flopped, Kalpataru stopped directing Hindi films entirely. Rishi called him and said, 'Yeh picture nahi chali, lekin humari dosti nahi tootni chahiye.' They stayed in touch, but never worked together again.
  • Rishi Kapoor once told a trade magazine: 'Kalpataru was the only director who let me be completely myself. He never said 'Ruko, yeh line aise bolo.' He trusted my madness.'
  • The only reason 'Ghar Ki Izzat' (1994) exists is because Kalpataru wanted to launch a new actress — a young Madhuri Dixit lookalike named Shilpa Shirodkar. Rishi agreed to star opposite her just to help his friend's discovery. The film tanked, and Shilpa's career never took off.
