Partnership facts

• Rama Narayanan was a struggling director when he cast Vijayakanth in Sivappu Malli (1981). The actor was still finding his footing too. That film became their first hit together and basically launched both their careers in commercial cinema.
• On the set of Vengaiyin Maindhan (1984), Rama Narayanan realized Vijayakanth could carry a full-on action film without a single romantic subplot. So he wrote the entire second half around just the actor's physicality — no songs, no comedy track. That film cemented Vijayakanth's 'action hero' image.
• Their 1985 film Engal Kural was one of the earliest Tamil movies to openly criticize caste-based violence in rural villages. It directly inspired a wave of 'angry young man' films in Tamil cinema through the late 80s, including some of Vijayakanth's own later hits.
• Rama Narayanan and Vijayakanth had a falling out after Neruppu Nila (1988). The director wanted to make a political film; the actor wanted to focus on mass entertainers. They never worked together again, and neither publicly explained the split.
• Vijayakanth once said in a 1990s interview: 'Rama Narayanan was the only director who let me be myself on screen. He never forced me to act — he just pointed the camera and said, do what you feel.'
