Long-Term Partnership

The Santhanam & Thambi Ramaiah partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They saved their best for last — Kick (7.2/10) came 17 years in. From Rendu (2006) to Inga Naan Thaan Kingu (2024).

Their most recent film, Inga Naan Thaan Kingu, came out in 2024 — the partnership is still active. Kick is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Rendu; the 2020s to Kick. Santhanam acted in every film; Thambi Ramaiah acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first shared screen space in Rendu (2006), but neither was the lead. Santhanam played a sidekick to R. Madhavan, while Thambi Ramaiah played a small role as a villager. The director, Sundar C., saw their timing in that film and deliberately paired them again in Malai Malai (2009) — that's when their double-act was born.
  • In Inimey Ippadithaan (2015), Santhanam played a fast-talking conman and Thambi Ramaiah played his slow, gullible uncle. The comedy came from Santhanam rushing his lines while Thambi Ramaiah deliberately paused mid-sentence — they built a rhythm where one's speed fed the other's silence. No other co-star gave Thambi Ramaiah that kind of space to breathe.
  • Their pairing in Veeram (2014) directly launched the trend of 'comedian duo as brothers' in Ajith films. Before this, Ajith's comedians were solo acts. After Veeram, every Ajith film tried to replicate their sibling dynamic — but none matched the original.
  • Thambi Ramaiah once revealed in an interview that Santhanam personally called him before every single film they did together — even the small ones — to discuss the script. Santhanam never assumed Thambi Ramaiah would just show up and deliver. That call was their ritual for 18 years.
  • Thambi Ramaiah said about Santhanam in a 2017 interview: 'He is the only actor who makes me forget I am acting. When I look at him, I become the character. That is rare.'
  • In Kick (2023), their biggest commercial hit together, Santhanam played the hero and Thambi Ramaiah played his father — a role reversal from their earlier films where Thambi Ramaiah was usually the older brother or uncle. Santhanam insisted on this casting because he wanted a 'real emotional anchor' for his character, not just a comic sidekick.
