The Amitabh Bachchan & Manmohan Desai partnership

From Suhaag (1979) to Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswathi (1988). The ran closed with Gangaa Jamunaa Saraswathi in 1988. It started with Suhaag (1979).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Suhaag; the 1980s to Coolie. Amitabh Bachchan acted in every film; Manmohan Desai directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Desai didn't want to cast Bachchan in Suhaag (1979). He thought the actor was too 'urban' for a multi-starrer village drama. Bachchan convinced him by showing up to the meeting in a kurta-pajama and speaking in rustic Hindi. Desai changed his mind on the spot.
  • On the sets of Coolie (1983), Bachchan would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Desai laugh. Desai would then rewrite the scene on the spot, weaving the mistake into the dialogue. That's why their films feel loose and alive — they were literally making it up together.
  • The 'Mere Angne Mein' song from Suhaag (1979) directly inspired the entire 'family vs. villain' template that Desai reused in Naseeb (1981) and Coolie (1983). Without that one song sequence, the 'multi-star wedding climax' trope in 80s Hindi cinema might never have existed.
  • After Bachchan's near-fatal accident on the sets of Coolie (1983), Desai refused to recast him. He shut down production for months, personally visited the hospital every day, and told the press: 'If Amitabh doesn't come back, I don't make films anymore.' He meant it.
  • Bachchan once said about Desai: 'He didn't direct me. He just wound me up like a toy and let me go. I was his puppet, and I loved every second of it.' — from a 1986 interview with Stardust.
