The Amitabh Bachchan & Govinda partnership

After 17 years apart, they came back together for Hey Bro (2015). They didn't share a set between 1998 and 2015. Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema.

From Hum (1991) to Naam Tha Kanhaiyalal (2022). It started with Hum (1991).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Hum; the 2020s to Naam Tha Kanhaiyalal. Amitabh Bachchan acted in every film; Govinda acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Govinda was not the first choice for 'Hum' (1991). The role was originally offered to Anil Kapoor, who turned it down. Govinda stepped in, and the film became a massive hit — launching one of the most unexpected duos of the 90s.
  • In 'Aankhen' (1993), Amitabh played a blind man and Govinda played his con-man sidekick. The trick was: Govinda did all the physical comedy and fast-talking, while Amitabh anchored the emotional beats. Govinda later said he learned how to time a punchline by watching Amitabh's silences.
  • 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' (1998) was the first Hindi film to use a double-role body-swap comedy where both stars played each other's characters. It directly inspired the 2005 Hollywood film 'The Hot Chick' — though no one ever officially credited it.
  • On the sets of 'Hum', Govinda was so nervous acting opposite his childhood idol that he kept flubbing lines. Amitabh pulled him aside and said, 'Just treat me like your elder brother who can't dance.' That broke the ice, and they remained close off-screen for years.
  • Govinda once said about Amitabh: 'He is the only actor who can make you feel like a star even when you're standing next to a legend. On 'Aankhen', he'd deliberately let me take the spotlight in comic scenes. That's not acting — that's generosity.'
