The Mithun Chakraborty & T.L.V. Prasad partnership

Between 1992 and 1999, they barely worked apart — 9 films in 7 years. 1996 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 7 years, a Mithun–T.L.V. film arrived almost every year.

The shape of the work

Mithun Chakraborty acted in every film; T.L.V. Prasad directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • T.L.V. Prasad was a Telugu director who barely spoke Hindi. Mithun Chakraborty trusted him anyway after Prasad showed him a single action sequence he'd shot on a shoestring budget. That first film, Zakhmi Sipahi (1992), became a hit and locked them into a seven-year partnership.
  • Prasad shot Mithun's fight scenes in long, unbroken takes — no cuts, no stunt double. Mithun had to do every punch and fall himself. On the set of Kaalia (1997), Mithun broke a rib during a rooftop brawl but refused to stop. Prasad later said, 'He never complained. He just got up and asked, 'Next shot?'
  • Their 1996 film Daanveer was the first Hindi movie to cast a then-unknown Raveena Tandon in a lead role opposite Mithun. She got the part because Prasad saw her in a music video and insisted. That film launched her into mainstream Bollywood.
  • Prasad and Mithun never had a written contract. They shook hands on every film. Prasad would fly from Hyderabad to Mumbai with a one-page story outline, Mithun would nod, and they'd start shooting within a week. No lawyers, no agents.
  • Mithun once told a trade magazine: 'Prasad saab doesn't waste time on coffee breaks. He finishes a film in 25 days. I like that. No nonsense, just action.'
  • In Phool Aur Aag (1999), their last film together, Mithun played a double role — a saintly brother and a violent gangster. Prasad shot both characters' scenes on the same day, switching Mithun's costume and makeup in 20 minutes. Mithun never flubbed a line between the two personalities.
