The Mithun Chakraborty & B. Subhash partnership

Between 1984 and 1990, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 6 years. From Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki (1984) to Pyar Ke Naam Qurbaan (1990). The unfolded closed with Pyar Ke Naam Qurbaan in 1990.

It started with Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki (1984).

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki; the 1990s to Pyar Ke Naam Qurbaan. Mithun Chakraborty acted in every film; B. Subhash directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • B. Subhash cast Mithun in 'Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki' (1984) after seeing his raw energy in 'Meri Aawaz Suno' — but the film was originally meant to launch a new hero. Subhash changed his mind after Mithun personally begged for the role during a late-night phone call.
  • On 'Dance Dance' (1987), Mithun and Subhash would fight over the choreography. Mithun wanted to bring in his own disco moves from Calcutta; Subhash insisted on Bollywood-style steps. They settled it by shooting both versions — and the final cut used Mithun's take for the climax song.
  • The success of 'Dance Dance' (1987) directly inspired Subhash to make 'Commando' (1988) — a film that accidentally created the template for the 'one-man army' action hero in Hindi cinema. Every 'Dabangg'-style mass entertainer owes a little to this Mithun-Subhash experiment.
  • During the shoot of 'Pyar Ke Naam Qurbaan' (1990), Mithun and Subhash stopped talking for three weeks over a disagreement about the climax. They only patched up when the producer locked them in a hotel room until they sorted it out. They never worked together again after this film.
  • B. Subhash once said: 'Mithun was the only actor who could make my ridiculous action scenes look believable. He'd jump off a building and land on his feet — and I'd just tell the cameraman to keep rolling.'
