• Padmini Kolhapure was just 19 when she starred opposite Sanjay Dutt in Do Dilon Ki Dastaan (1985). She was already a National Award winner; he was still finding his footing. The film was a launchpad for their pairing, but it tanked.
• In Qurbani Rang Layegi (1991), Padmini played a woman pretending to be a man. Sanjay’s character doesn’t recognize her. The comedy works because she underplays the disguise while he overplays the confusion — she sets the rhythm, he follows.
• After Qurbani Rang Layegi flopped, they didn’t work together for 28 years. Then Ashutosh Gowariker cast them as mother and son in Panipat (2019). Padmini later said it felt surreal — she had played his love interest, now she was playing his mother.
• Padmini Kolhapure on Panipat: “I was nervous to play Sanjay’s mother. But he walked up to me on set and said, ‘Didi, aap toh meri real life mein bhi mother figure ho.’ That broke the ice.”
• Panipat (2019) was the only film in their three-film collaboration that worked at the box office. It also marked the first time a mainstream Hindi film showed a mother-son relationship between two actors who had previously played lovers — a casting choice that sparked debate.
