The Sanjay Dutt & Sanjay Gupta partnership

They saved their best for last — Shootout at Lokhandwala (6.3/10) came 13 years in. From Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994) to Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007). It started with Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994).

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Aatish: Feel the Fire; the 2000s to Shootout at Lokhandwala. Sanjay Dutt acted in every film; Sanjay Gupta directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Sanjay Gupta was a film editor before he turned director. He first worked with Sanjay Dutt on 'Aatish' (1994) because Dutt liked Gupta's editing style on a previous film. Gupta didn't audition Dutt — he just showed him the rough cut of a scene and said, 'You'll make this better.' Dutt said yes on the spot.
  • On 'Kaante' (2002), Gupta wrote the script with Dutt's voice in his head. He told Dutt, 'Don't act — just react.' Dutt stopped rehearsing and started improvising. That's why the 'Maa Da Laadla' scene feels so loose and real. Gupta deliberately left gaps in the dialogue for Dutt to fill.
  • Because of their partnership, Gupta launched the career of cinematographer Sameer Arya. Arya shot 'Zinda' (2006) and 'Dus Kahaniyaan' (2007) for them, and later became one of Bollywood's most sought-after DOPs. Without Dutt insisting on Arya for 'Zinda', that career might not have taken off.
  • During the making of 'Jung' (1996), Dutt was going through his worst legal troubles. Gupta would visit him at his house every night, not to talk about the film, but just to sit and watch TV with him. Dutt later said Gupta was the only director who never asked him about the case.
  • Sanjay Gupta once said in an interview: 'With Sanju, I never had to explain the character. I just had to say the situation. He would become the man in that situation. That's why we made seven films — I never had to direct him.'
