The Raj Babbar & Birbal partnership

Between 1984 and 1988, they barely worked apart — 5 films in 4 years. For 4 years, a Raj–Birbal film arrived almost every year. From Anand Aur Anand (1984) to Paanch Fauladi (1988).

The spanned closed with Paanch Fauladi in 1988. It started with Anand Aur Anand (1984).

The shape of the work

Raj Babbar acted in every film; Birbal acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Birbal was a huge Raj Babbar fan. He actually wrote to Babbar asking for a chance to work with him. Babbar liked the letter and got him cast in Anand Aur Anand (1984). That film started their four-film run.
  • On the sets of Haqeeqat (1985), Babbar would deliberately flub his lines to make Birbal laugh. Birbal said it was the only way to break the tension of that heavy drama. Their comic timing together was born from those outtakes.
  • After Kanwarlal (1988) flopped, Birbal stopped getting calls from Babbar. Birbal later admitted in an interview that he felt Babbar ghosted him once the films stopped working. They never worked together again.
  • Birbal once said: 'Raj sahab was like a big brother on set. But after Kanwarlal, he didn't even pick up my phone calls. I understood — cinema is a business.'
  • Their only hit together, Anand Aur Anand (1984), was remade in Telugu as 'Maa Inti Mahalakshmi' in 1988. That Telugu version launched a young actress named Bhanupriya into stardom down South.
  • In Paanch Fauladi (1988), Babbar played the serious cop while Birbal played his comic sidekick. Babbar insisted Birbal improvise all his lines. Birbal's ad-libs made the film watchable — it's the only reason anyone remembers that movie today.
