• Poonam Dhillon was the first choice for Sohni in 'Sohni Mahiwal' (1984), but Umesh Mehra, the director, initially hesitated because he thought she looked too modern for the folk legend. She convinced him by reciting a couplet from the original tale during the narration.
• On the set of 'Avinash' (1986), Umesh Mehra would deliberately not tell Poonam the full plot before a scene. He wanted her reactions to be raw and unscripted, especially in the emotional climax — a technique he never used with any other actress.
• During the shoot of 'Kasam' (1988), Umesh Mehra would personally drive Poonam back to her hotel every night because she was scared of the remote location. They'd stop for chai at the same dhaba near Film City — a ritual that continued even after the film wrapped.
• Poonam Dhillon once said in a 1990 interview: 'Umesh saab never treated me like a star. He'd yell at me like a schoolgirl if I was late. But he also taught me how to cry on cue without glycerin. That's why I did three films with him.'
• The song 'Tu Mujhe Suna' from 'Sohni Mahiwal' (1984) was the first Hindi film song to be shot entirely underwater in a studio tank. Umesh Mehra and Poonam spent 14 hours in the water for that single sequence — and it inspired a generation of underwater song sequences in the 1990s.
